The horse is a roaming animal. Over the last 40 million years of grazing for 17 hours a day, horses did not develop the mechanism that turns stomach acid on and off like other animals, including humans. A horse’s stomach produces acid 24 hours a day even if there is no food in it. Domesticated or stalled horses are fed three times a day on average which leads to a build up of excess stomach acid which can cause stomach ulcers in horses.

The Horse- Journal published the results of field trials on the leading thrush remedies in their December 2009 issue.
